Full polar ear structure

Traditional batteries only have two pole ears, which are connected to the positive and negative poles, while the 4680 battery achieves full pole ears (directly cutting out the pole ears from the positive/negative poles), greatly increasing the current path and shortening the distance between the poles, thereby greatly improving battery power.

Full pole ear advantage

1. Improved output power: The battery current path is widened, and the internal resistance is significantly reduced, resulting in a decrease in internal losses and a significant increase in battery power (6 times that of 2170 batteries). 2. Improving safety: Unlike sheet batteries, cylindrical batteries dissipate most of their heat axially, with heat escaping from the electrode ears. Traditional cylindrical batteries such as 2170 only have two ears and narrow heat transfer channels, resulting in poor heat dissipation. The electrode area of the 4680 battery has greatly increased, and the heat transfer channel is wide, greatly improving the heat dissipation effect (only 20% of traditional cylindrical batteries) and enhancing the thermal stability of the battery. 3. Significant improvement in fast charging performance: Due to the all-pole ear structure, electrons are easier to move inside the battery, resulting in an increase in current rate and faster charging and discharging speeds. 4. Improve production efficiency: Eliminate the process and time of adding pole ears to the production line, save equipment space, and reduce the possibility of manufacturing defects.

Difficulties in the full pole ear process

1. In the production of all polar ears, the problem of collecting polar ears is commonly understood as the process of folding polar ears together. Currently, there are three types of polar ears: kneading and pressing polar ears, cutting and dropping polar ears, and multipole ears: 1) The shape of the rubbing and pressing electrode ear is not controlled, which is prone to short circuits. During manufacturing, the two sections are closed, and there is a large obstacle to electrolyte infiltration; 2) Tesla is inclined cut into sheets and rolled up, which is better than irregular extrusion and takes up less space. However, the surface undulation is relatively large, and the two sections are still closed during manufacturing, making it impossible to produce continuously with liquid injection; 3) The multipole ear is difficult to fold neatly, and the position error of the multipole ear is easily amplified in the outer circle. 2. In the connection between the full pole ear and the collector plate or shell, there is a high requirement for laser welding technology: from spot welding (traditional two pole ears) to surface welding (4680 battery full pole ear), the welding process and welding quantity have increased, the laser intensity and focal length are not easy to control, and it is easy to weld through and burn into the interior of the battery cell or not weld. Currently, the battery yield rate is low (80%).

4680 batteries are currently mainly oriented towards high nickel content
