Semi solid state batteries are a type of solid-state battery, and the advantages of solid-state batteries apply to them. The following text mainly describes the advantages of solid-state batteries. Solid state batteries have advantages such as good safety, high energy density, and more flexible grouping methods.
(1) Solid state batteries have good safety. Traditional lithium-ion batteries using combustible organic electrolytes may generate heat from the electrolyte during abnormal conditions such as overcharging and internal short circuits, posing a risk of spontaneous combustion or even explosion. Solid electrolytes are mostly resistant to high temperatures and non flammable, significantly reducing the risk of battery self ignition or explosion. However, as an energy storage device, all batteries cannot be absolutely safe from a thermodynamic perspective. In practical applications of batteries, the factors that truly determine their safety are multifaceted, including the characteristics of electrolyte materials, electrode materials, battery quality control, and battery management systems. Therefore, although the introduction of solid electrolytes can greatly improve safety in principle, the quality control and battery management system for subsequent production are still very important.
(2) Solid state batteries have high energy density. Compared to traditional liquid batteries, semi-solid batteries have a higher energy density. Weilan New Energy and Guoxuan High tech have developed semi-solid batteries with an energy density of 360Wh/kg. For the positive electrode, most solid-state electrolytes have a wider electrochemical window and can be compatible with more high-voltage positive electrode materials (such as high nickel positive electrodes, nickel manganese spinel positive electrodes, etc.). In addition, the high voltage ratio and good safety of all solid state batteries can also simplify battery management systems, and the energy density of battery systems used in new energy vehicles can be further improved.
(3) Solid state batteries have more flexible grouping methods. Solid state batteries can be assembled in series, and the voltage of individual batteries can be increased by connecting the internal electrodes in series. The voltage of a single battery with an internal string structure can reach the voltage level of multiple battery cells connected in series, reducing the use of packaging structures and improving grouping efficiency.
(4) Solid state batteries are expected to take the technology of new energy vehicle battery devices to a higher level. In addition to high safety and energy density, new energy vehicle battery devices also need to meet many requirements, such as long cycle life, wide operating temperature range, resistance to compression, vibration, etc. Solid state batteries are expected to solve these needs through the following methods: to obtain high quality energy density, high energy density embedded compounds, sulfur based materials, etc. are used as positive electrodes; To achieve high volumetric energy density, dense thin layer electrolyte technology and high pressure solid density positive electrode are used; In order to obtain long cycle life, control the volume expansion of positive and negative electrodes and maintain interface contact, such as using composite electrodes, flexible, amorphous, gel state interfaces, etc; To achieve wide temperature range operation (-70~150 ºC), superionic conductors, solid-liquid bonding, thermal management, etc. are used; To improve the ability to withstand compression and puncture, a metal lithium composite electrode that is not easy to powder and a solid electrolyte that is not easy to oxidize, flammable or explosive are used; To improve the level of vibration resistance, use materials containing flexibility or system shock absorption; To reduce costs and facilitate mass production, improvements can be made by
